Expandable polystyrene (EPS)

Created at the start of 2007, the Expandable Polystyrene (EPS) Sectoral Committee, comprising manufacturers of styrene expandable polystyrene, has as its main objective promoting the sustainable growth of the EPS market dedicated to civil construction.

In 2007, it is estimated that the EPS volume reached 55.8 thousand tons, a volume practically equal to that of 2006. Over 50% of that total was allotted to the packaging sector, the product´s main application in Brazil. Civil construction, an area that the Committee seeks to encourage, answered for nearly 30% of the total volume. The distribution of the Brazilian expandable polystyrene market is quite different from that of the European Union and other countries, such as Chile, in which civil construction is the largest market for EPS.

During the year, the Committee made efforts to divulge expandable polystyrene, its applications in civil construction and the relationship between its use as a thermal insulator and energy conservation. It argued for the insertion of a specific sub-item in the Mercosur Common Nomenclature (NCM) and the lowering of the IPI rate for the product, when destined for civil construction. It also started actions to integrate the regulatory efforts of the National Program for Energy Efficiency in Buildings (Procel Edifica).
